Speaking on 27th February 2026 at Parliament in Lilongwe immediately after delivering the national budget statement, Honorable Joseph Mwanamveka, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, emphasized that the project remains a top government priority despite not appearing in the current budget framework.
“The Salima-Lilongwe Water Project is a DPP project; it was initiated by His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, and as government we will make sure it is completed.”
The Minister highlighted the historical significance of the project, noting that it was initiated under the leadership of Arthur Peter Mutharika and remains central to government’s long-term infrastructure agenda.
Addressing concerns regarding financing, Hon. Mwanamveka assured Malawians that mechanisms are already being explored to secure the necessary resources. While it does not appear in the budget, the Minister said government has planned and will make sure they secure innovative financing for the project.
